From Scrolls to Scrolling - Keynote Address
Lev Grossman
This presentation on the future of the book will begin with a look at another critical book moment … the superseding of the humble scroll of antiquity by the codex book. Both were, essentially, technologies for displaying text, with their own strengths and flaws.
As the new ‘book’ format triumphed, it ushered in a dramatic change in content.
That ancient crisis can help us understand what is happening now. The recent ascendancy of the e-book format will again transform literature as we know it.
But how?
With his combination of technical know-how and creative insights, Lev Grossman will look at where novels (and the publishing industry) will evolve in the future.
The Reading of Narrative
Panel Discussion
Three researchers into the mysteries of reading reveal what many of us have always intuited: reading fiction is good for you and makes you better for others. In this panel, Keith Oatley, Maja Djikic and Raymond Mar will impart their recent findings and discuss the implications of e-reading and storytelling. Choice, interactivity and reader response will be on the menu.
Workshops
These 75-minute workshops will give you practical, hands-on advice and training. Come prepared to participate and bring your laptop, your specific experience and your questions. The six workshop choices are repeated twice: EPUB 3: The New Standard, Book App Development and Promotion, The New Manuscript: For Writers and Editors, Transmedia: What It Means, The Kids Are All Right: Potential for Digital Content and Sharing the Narrative: Gaming and Interactive Digital Media.
Food for Thought
Panel Discussion
The day will end with a lively panel discussion reflecting on the day’s conversations. Moderated by CBC’s Nora Young, the panelists include Brett Savory from ChiZine Publications, Jennifer Knoch from ECW Press, Keith Clayton from Random House Publishing Group, and Emily Schultz, author of the novel Joyland, poet and publisher.
